“If we don’t center the voices of marginalized people, we are doing the wrong work.” Powerful words from our AWARE keynote speaker Tarana Burke! This work requires us to reckon with oppression and racism and address profound harm done to victims/survivors and—with that lens— collectively reimagine what justice, healing and community truly mean. We can’t wait to learn from Tarana Burke at our upcoming AWARE event. Join us on April 28 (link in bio)! #SAAM #SAAM22

Climate change harms us all but particularly affects marginalized communities such as survivors. Natural disasters can lead to increased violence. Extractive industries and the man camps that come with them lead to increased sexual violence in the communities they spring up in, especially Indigenous communities.

Leah is a 22 year old mixed-race woman and mother of two young children from Snohomish County in Washington State. She is a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault currently facing 20 years to life in prison for allegedly shooting her abusive ex-boyfriend in the leg. Leah spent eleven months incarcerated in the Pierce County jail before a community mobilization campaign helped to get her released on bail. She is currently on electronic home monitoring, allowing her to be home with her children and family.

Leah faces trial starting on April 19. If convicted, she would be takening her away from her babies, family, and community.

We believe that Leah and all child and adult victims of violence should be loved and supported, their well-being should be prioritized, and they should be given the crucial resources that they need to recover. Please join us in endorsing supporting Leah’s defense campaign by donating and helping us pack the court. If you are interested in getting involved, please email liberateleah@gmail.com.
